How I Work

Taking the Guesswork out of working with a Freelance Writer!

When you're looking to hire a freelancer, the first question you ask is, "How easy is this person to work with?"

Let's be honest, hiring any employee can be stressful. Making the wrong choice can be costly. Both in your limited budget and your precious time.

As a freelancer, I have the same fears. What if we don't work well together? What if you don't pay your invoice on time? What if you ask for services I don't offer or weren't covered in the brief? You get the drift.

So, let me share my working process with you. Then there won't be any surprises and you'll know right away if I'm the professional you're looking for.

STEP 1:

Everything starts with a conversation. We'll schedule a time for at least 30 minutes to chat. Make sure you have a drink close by! Because you're going to be talking, a lot.

Before our chat, I'll send you a Client Questionnaire with the topics we'll cover. No need to fill it out beforehand! This isn't an essay test. This is simply to get you thinking about why you need a freelance copywriter.

During our talk, I'll ask about what's working with your current campaigns... and what isn't! I want to know what you love about your organization. Who your donors are and how you're keeping in touch with them. You can tell me anything. Rant away! No matter what, I get it. Being a fundraiser can be stressful and lonely.

STEP 2:

After our conversation, I'll put together a comprehensive quote tailored to your needs.

This includes all services I can offer you with pricing and estimated timelines. We'll schedule a time to go over it in depth. You can ask any questions or make changes, if needed.

All quotes and pricing are effective for 3 months from the date received. This takes away the stress of making a decision before you're ready.

STEP 3:

Yay! You've decided to work with me.

I'll send you a contract including all the services we've agreed on with payment schedule.

For one-time campaigns I typically ask for a 50% deposit, balance paid upon completion. For retainer contracts, we'll agree on a monthly payment schedule.

Once we have both signed the contract and you pay the deposit, we can begin!

Step 4:

Now you have to fill out that essay test I mentioned!

I'll send you a comprehensive Client Brief to craft copy for your campaign. You are the expert in your nonprofit, and I need to know what you know! For example:

  • Detailed donor demographic & psychographic information
  • Research sources for background information
  • Details about the current campaign, including the story hook, deadline, ask amounts, etc.
  • Personalization copy from your CRM for specific donors

STEP 5:

I take everything I've learned from you and get to work.

This is why I don't work on an hourly basis. You don't need to worry how much time it takes me to complete the project, so long as it gets done on schedule!

From here on out, it's my job to stare at that blank screen and decide what to write! All you have to do is read it and ask for revisions, if needed. Phew! Don't you feel better already?

STEP 6:

Once you're happy with the copy, you hand it off to your graphic designer. While I can do basic graphic design, you're better off talking to a pro.

That said, I will make suggestions about the best way to highlight the copy or where to place it.

STEP 7:

We send the campaign out to your wonderful donors and take a deep breath. I'd love to say I can guarantee you'll make more money than ever, but I can't.

Fundraising relies on a whole host of factors. Your past donor relationships. Time of year. World events. The right campaign at the wrong time.

I will do my best to tell the most emotional story, craft the strongest offer, and create a sense of urgency. I'll put it all on the line... and then it's up to your donors to tell us if we got it right.
